Omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids
Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid) are most common polyunsaturated fatty acids in food. The omega-6 family actually has three members: gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), arachidonic acid, and dihomo-linoleic acid. Of the three, GLA is probably the most useful for helping health problems.

The omega-3 family has three related members: alpha linolenic acid (LNA), eicosapentenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). LNA is found in plant foods, especially nuts, soybeans, conola oil, and flaxseed oil. EPA and DHA are found in fish oil. Omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids are important for making prostaglandins in our body. Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances made from fatty acids. They regulate many activities in our body, including inflammation, pain, and swelling. They also play a role in controlling our blood pressure, heart, kidneys and digestive system. Prostaglandins are also important for allergic reactions, blood clotting, and making other hormones. Prostaglandins are a double-edged sword: some cause swelling and others relieve it. We use omega-3 fatty acids to make some kinds of prostaglandins and omega-6 fatty acids to make others. By changing the amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in our body, we may be able to change our prostaglandin levels

Why should we supplement Omega-3 fatty acid
Our everyday diet contains more omega-6 and less omega-3.
As essential nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids cannot be manufactured within our bodies from other kinds of fatty acids. They must be obtained from the foods we eat. The problem is what we simply do not get enough omega-3s in our standard American diet. Some experts believe the American diet provides plenty of both essential fatty acids (EFAs), while others contend that it falls far short of what is needed for optimal health because of its emphasis on foods high in hydrogenated fats¡Xthe type used in commercial baked goods, margarine, and other processed foods¡Xwhich lack EFAs. In addition, the typical American diet provides far too many omega-6 fatty acids and not enough omega-3s. While both types of fatty acids are essential, too much omega-6s and not enough omega-3s may increase the risk for a host of illnesses including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma, and even depression. The current dietary balance is somewhere between 10:1 and 20:1 in favor of omega-6s. Experts recommend that the balance be shifted closer to a ratio of 4:1, or 4g of omega-6 for every 1g of omega-3s. Supplementing the diet with omega-3 fatty acids, as well as cutting back on dietary omega-6 fatty acid intake, can shift the EFA balance to a healthier direction.

Studies: Benefits of Seal Oil
Studies also confirmed that consumption of marine oils changed the fatty acid composition of serum significantly and seal oil gave 30% higher level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). One study performed by Bonefeld-Jorgensen, Moller, and Hansen in 2001 examined whether dietary supplementation with seal oil influenced the risk factors of atherosclerosis in healthy volunteers. Two intervention studies were carried out as preliminary steps in a larger project which aim at elucidating the disease preventive potential of seal oil. In study I ten healthy volunteers added 10 capsules of seal oil to their normal Western diet for six weeks. Blood tests were analysed for total-, HDL-, and LDL-cholesterol and plasma triglyceride, and the ratio of n-6/n-3 fatty acid was determined in plasma and erythrocyte membranes. In study II we examined the effect in five healthy volunteers who had only 5 capsules of seal oil daily for six weeks. As an additional test in study II, the effect on the proinflammatory TNF-alpha cytokine in lymphocytes was determined. A slightly decreased, however, not significant effect was observed for each of the cholesterol's after seal oil supplementation. In both studies plasma triglyceride, and the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio of plasma and erythrocytes were significantly reduced upon seal oil intake. During the intervention period of study II a distinct reduced level of TNF-alpha was observed in isolated lymphocytes. The examinations suggest that supplementation of seal oil, 10 capsules or 5 capsules/day, may have beneficial effects on factors thought to be associated with cardiovascular and thrombotic diseases.
